Single-sided deafness (SSD), single-sided hearing or unilateral hearing loss are terms used to describe a condition in which there is some to significant or total hearing loss in one ear. The loss may be due from viral infections, but can also be from Meniere’s disease, inner ear damage from the head or ear injury, or brain tumor surgical removal.
You may be very familiar with this scenario: you’re in a noisy room and can’t hear your partner or colleagues because they’re not sitting on “your good side”. What about when you’re on the phone but aren’t aware of your surrounding environment because your hearing ear is occupied?
While there may not be any cure for your SSD, there are various options for treatment available. There are hearing devices that can restore the sensation of hearing from both sides by transferring sound from the ear with hearing loss to the hearing ear.
