How To Stay Protected Against COVID-19

Right now, the world has been thrown for a loop. A good portion of you reading this should be at home practicing social distancing and keeping yourself safe from any exposure from the outside world. Thankfully, we’re knowledgeable enough to know what the symptoms are, who is most at risk, and what you need to do to help prevent the spread. Here’s everything you need to know thus far.

What are the symptoms?

Similar to other viruses, the Coronavirus or COVID-19 has an incubation period. Symptoms will appear around 2 to 14 days after the exposure. These symptoms include:

● A fever
● A cough
● Shortness of breath

When should you see a doctor?

This virus has symptoms that will range in severity, but it can become dangerous if left unchecked. Immediately seek medical attention if you’re experiencing:
● A persistent pressure or pain in your chest
● The inability to get up or a new confusion develops
● You’re having trouble breathing
● Your lips or face become a bluish shade

Who is at risk?

COVID-19 does not discriminate against its victims, but some are more susceptible to it. At the moment, the discovery is that adults who are 65 years or older are affected more as well as individuals who already have an underlying condition. These individuals may not have properly functioning immune systems, thus making them weaker to the virus.

How can you help?

The simple answer is to avoid exposure. Currently, we are all practicing “social distancing” where, unless you live with the person, you need to keep a 6-foot distance. Since the COVID-19 spreads from person-to-person mostly, this 6-foot distance will significantly help. Other ways to stop the spread is to:
Thoroughly wash your hands: Every time you wash your hands, make sure it’s for at least 20 seconds with soap. If you are unable to wash your hands for whatever reason, promptly use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Wash your hands after: Coughing, Blowing your nose, Sneezing
Stay home: Stay home, especially if you’re sick. Some states, Pennsylvania included, currently have a Stay Home order. You’re allowed to go outside and do essential shopping but stay at home as much as possible. This does not mean you have to be stuck indoors, however. Getting fresh air is encouraged but avoid crowded areas. Practice social distancing at all times when dealing with those who do not live in your home.
Cover your sneezes and coughs: If you cough or sneeze, make sure you use either a tissue or the inside of your elbow. Throw any used tissues away. If you do use a tissue or accidentally cough/sneeze into your hands, wash your hands immediately with the directions stated above or use hand sanitizer.
Use a facemask when needed: Not everyone needs to wear a facemask. Those who do are individuals who are sick or have a low immune system. People who are caring for those individuals should wear a facemask as well.
Clean & Disinfect: Clean and disinfect your home to ensure that none of the germs stay in your home. Disinfection is extremely important, not just cleaning. Depending on the material, the Coronavirus can remain on a surface for hours, if not days without you even realizing it. Make sure you clean BEFORE you disinfect for the best results.
